Every Problem has a Solution

6-11 acres are the minimum acreages to qualify for Present Use Value (PUV) tax program. In order to qualify for PUV you must have 5 acres in Horticulture, 10 acres in Agriculture or 20 acres in Forestry. The County Tax Department automatically takes out 1 acre for your house so 6 or 11 is the minimum total to qualify for the program. 

Why not 21 acres? Well at an average $10,000 an acre in Moore County, 6-11 is attainable for new and young farmers to get into a farm with a house and a barn. 

What is so special about Present Use Value? Well it significantly reduces your tax burden making farming a viable option for more families. Plus, by being in the PUV program you automatically become a Bona Fide farm, which provides a number of additional benefits, like exemption from burdensome zoning and building ordinances for necessary farm structures. 

This idea, won't limit farms sizes - those who are ‘Daddy Warbucks’ can always buy more, but this makes farms affordable for more families AND helps meet the first goal of the Land Use Plan:  "Preserve and Protect the Ambiance and Heritage of the County of Moore" by promoting Moore County history and farming!
